Two streets, both real, both marked, a few minutes apart on foot and on opposite sides of the building. On Friday you go to Piazza SS. Apostoli, 66. On Saturday you go to Via della Pilotta, 17. The accessible entrance for visitors with mobility difficulties is Piazza SS. Apostoli, 66 — which is the Friday door on both days, so if you need it on a Saturday, say so when you book rather than at the gate.

What Friday gives you that Saturday does not

A guide, at a fixed hour, in a named language. The operator runs guided visits on Friday mornings by reservation, and publishes the start times: 9:30, 10:00 and 10:30 in Italian; 9:30 and 10:00 in English; 10:30 in French. It calls those guided tours free, and it also prices a Friday complete guided tour on the same rates page. The reading that fits both is that the guiding costs nothing on top of the Friday ticket, and I am flagging that as my reading rather than as the operator’s sentence. The other thing Friday gives you is that it is the complete visit. The Friday tariff has one row and it is the complete guided tour, so the apartments question that dogs the Saturday tickets does not arise.

What Saturday gives you that Friday does not

Four hours and your own pace. 9:15 to 13:15, arrive when you like, leave when you like, and nobody moves you on. On the flagship listing Laurie wrote that she and her party had “a lot of fun taking our picture with being able to sit in the chairs and pose by the gorgeous paintings” and that “no guide was needed”. That is one person’s morning rather than a verdict, but it describes the Saturday shape exactly.

Saturday is also the cheaper morning and the only one with a choice of tier: the short tour, at about fifteen euros, covers the Galleria, the Pio pavilion and the gardens, and the complete tour, at about twenty-five, adds the Princess Isabelle apartments. The audioguide is a Saturday product too, about five euros, delivered by QR code to your own phone in Italian, English, French, Spanish, German and Russian. Which platform listing suits which morning

Here is a limitation worth stating rather than papering over: the platform listings do not print which of the two mornings they are for. They sell an entry, a date and a set of inclusions. The day-by-day structure above comes from the operator, not from them. What you can do is match the shape of the product to the shape of the morning.

The flagship entry ticket is admission with the guided tour crossed out, which is a Saturday shape. The complete listing is the whole route with a live guide crossed out, which is the Saturday complete ticket’s shape. The listing titled a guided tour makes its guide conditional, so what it is depends entirely on the option you pick. If a guide is the reason you are going, the operator’s Friday morning is the version of that with a published timetable behind it.
